County Wide Reductions
Should the operational strategy which is out for public consultation and forms part of the corporate plan be approved what will it mean for you? The view in individual boroughs varies but the figures as a whole can make alarming reading, these calculations are from data contained in the corporate plan document.

The Corporate Plan of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has been published for public consultation. The document is very easy to read and frankly it tries to hide nothing. A brief look though could be misleading, all the detail is actually tucked away in the appendix. If you get that far you will see that the people of Greater Manchester as a whole will get a worse service. We can not see how any risk modeling can make people in High and Very High risk areas wait longer for a fire engine. We do urge you to take the time and read it. All statistics through out this site have been calculated using the data within the Corporate Plan.
We have decided to concentrate on first strike fire appliances ie the one that will turn up if you are in the unfortunate situation of having a fire. Where mutual support from a neighboring borough has been affected we have linked to the appropriate borough. There is a separate section covering special appliances, this will impact on first strike appliances due to the way GMF&RS intend to crew them and where this happens the two pages are linked.
The main concerns are,
- There will be less fire engines available during the day and even less at night when most fire deaths occur.
- The time it takes for a fire engine to arrive will go up in 57% of the wards across the county.
- There will be less firefighters on some fire engines, this will present two problems. Firefighters would be unable to commit crews initial due to safety issues due to reduced crew size, in reality firefighters would almost certainly compromise their own safety which could have repercussions for the individuals concerned.
